Come Walk with Me, Done!

"Come Walk with Me" by Cathy Geier
Hi Everyone! I'm done with the quilting and this is the finished quilt. This blog will be very short, sweet and to the point. Last weekend I went to the International Quilt Festival show in Chicago and in a few days I'll be putting together a big ole long blog with lots of photographs of the gorgeous quilts there.  Before I set that one up though I wanted to show you the final images of the quilt I've been working on for the last month or so.

Detail of the path

I quilted the path using long back and forth stitches in a variety of thread colors. It's pretty subtle, but in some areas I used green threads, some areas dark brown and in some others I used light neutral colored threads. Most of the threads were either Sulky or Superior, 40 weight variegated poly or rayon. I really like those threads!

I pretty much stipple quilted the entire forest. In my opinion, when you are quilting over busy prints, you might as well stipple because nothing you do really shows up anyway.

Detail of the branch
I stitched down the tree branch itself after the batting was fused on and before the backing was fused on. All those red leaves were stitched down around the edges during the quilting process using a dark variegate red thread. The tree and branches were quilted with a long up and down zig-zagging stitch. You can see a closeup of it from another quilt here - Overhanging Oak, scroll down to see the quilting

Let's see... I used Warm & Natural batting and I faced the edges instead of using a regular binding.  Warm and natural gives me such a nice firm quilt that hangs so straight and flat  once it's blocked. I really like that batting for my wall hangings.  Someday I'll try using a wool batting though and see it works better or not.

Ellie Cat is calling. I must obey...

That's all from me for a few days. Next time I'll show you some of the wonderful quilts from Chicago.

Comments and questions welcome. (And once I'm done playing with my cat I promise to answer, lol!)

  1. Cathy your quilts are amazing. This one actually took my breath away. The color of that red is so deep and perfect - it just pulls you right in. Such amazing talent you have. I looked at the quilts you have in your gallery and also love the barn on the scrappy blocks. I may be inspired to try that! Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you for the wonderfully kind words Kathleen! Every time someone mentions my talent I want to come back with the fact that I've been making landscape quilts for 15+ years now and that I learned from my mistakes. I just don't consider myself that gifted, but if I can encourage you to delve into making the kind of quilts that feed your soul then one day you'll have people admiring your quilts too. The scrappy blocks are fun and fast! Then you can do all sorts of fun stuff in the foreground meadow. Thank you again for the kind words!

  2. I love your quilts. I was blown away from the beautiful sunset quilt at the local Sun Prairie Quilt Show--congratulations on the well deserved ribbon! I attended the a International Quilt Show last Friday and enjoyed all the beautiful quilts, especially the art quilts. Looking forward to your next blog,

    1. I really need to get that blog together, lol! I have 2 quilts in that 'folder' and need to process the hundreds of others. There were so many really cool quilts there! I wish I could have taken pics of the 500 Traditional Quilts, some of those were amazing and it was so interesting looking at their choices.

I'm glad you liked the sunset - it was the first time I showed it this year. Whenever I show something I'm always a little apprehensive because I never know how it will be received. I was thrilled that it did so well in Sun Prairie. I'm planning on showing this Come, Walk quilt at Expo in the fall. That will be it's 'maiden' showing. Thanks for writing to me.

    1. Hi Zeenath! I hope all is well with you and yours. At least you are enjoying warm sunny weather down there! I hope you find plenty to inspire you around here and thank you for your warm words, I'm glad I was able to 'speak' to you through all this social media stuff. Sometimes I feel like I say too much and sometimes I feel like I could keep on sharing and talking for hours. I'm glad you don't think I'm a crazy person! Thanks for writing again!

    1. Thanks Robyn. The sewing was the easy part - I used a tear-away foundation and I think I had in done in a 2-3 days. Someone on facebook asked me how long it took to make this quilt and I realized that it came together pretty fast - for me. It took about a month. The last couple of days I've been sewing on sleeves and labels for the back. I'll be starting another project or 2 soon though. But first, I need to post quilt show pictures. Thanks again!

    1. Thanks! Ellie Cat is something else. Lately she has been jumping right up on my quilt when I'm trying to sew... I guess when cats want attention they will do what it takes to get it. :)

I just looked at your blog - I love your bright colors! :)
